July 25, 2015 marked the beginning of the 2015 Special Olympic Summer World Games in Los Angeles, CA, U.S.A. The World Games has the same concept as the Olympic Games, as it is held at a voted international city every four years. With the World Games being presented to Los Angeles in 2011, this became the city's first major international sporting event since the 1984 Summer Olympics.
I was fortunate enough to be involved in these games as a Fan Development Team Captain! In this role, my responsibility included recruiting fans, raising awareness of the Special Olympic Spirit, and being assigned to the Athletics competition at USC. We came across many inspiring, and hardworking athletes. These athletes have struggled through disabilities, some physical others mental, but all of them impressive beyond compare. Making it on to the biggest stage in their sport has exemplified the human spirit, and true excellence in sports!
As the torched dimmed over Los Angeles on August 02, 2015, a new light was passed on to Graz/Schladming Austria, host of the 2017 Special Olympic Winter World Games. We are excited to see all the winter athletes perform in two years!
To all the athletes that participated in these Games, we salute all your committment and determination!
