On July 31, 2015 the International Olympic Committee announced that out of the two final candidate cities to host the 2022 Olympic Winter Games (Beijing, China or Almaty, Kazakhstan), BEIJING will host the 2022 Olympic Games.
The city of Beijing has become the first city in Olympic history to host both Summer and Winter Olympic Games. Almaty, a city rich in Oil and Economical power in central Asia, would have been the first city to host the Games in a central Asian nation. They would have also been the smallest by population to host an Olympics since Greece in 2004.
Beijing, coming off as a powerful influence in sports in recent years, and with the success of the 2008 Olympics, is ready to take on this new challenge as host of these Winter Games. The Beijing Olympic Committee will utilize most venues that were built for the 2008 Summer Olympics. The Water Cube, where American swimmer Michael Phelps won 8 gold medals, will become the Ice Cube for curling.
There will be much anticipation to see what show Beijing, and the Chinese people will put on for us, as the world will return to the Birds Nest for the Opening Ceremony in 7 years.
